What Is Commercial Spray Fireproofing?

Spray-applied fireproofing is what’s known as passive fire protection or PFP. It delays or prevents damage to steel and concrete structures exposed to fire and heat. The building’s structural integrity is secure, and its components are protected from reaching temperatures that might result in complete failure. Unlike active fire protection systems such as fire sprinklers designed to activate when a fire is present, PFPs are permanently in place.

Spray-applied fireproofing is the most widely used PFP and is available in two forms:

  • Cementitious fireproofing, an easy-to-apply wet material that’s typically gypsum-based, is applied as a slurry that dries to form a cement-like coating. It’s the perfect solution for protecting structures in industrial environments.
  • Sprayed fiber fireproofing is a dry-mix preparation made up of mineral wool fiber with a portland cement-based binder. It comes in multiple densities, including standard density for concealed applications and medium or high density for exposed applications.

Intumescent Coatings

Unlike spray-applied barriers, intumescent coatings respond to extreme heat by expanding. Aesthetically attractive, they’re ideal in situations where appearance is of primary importance and can be tinted to match or complement just about any color. They’re:

  • Available in both water-based and solvent formulations
  • Appropriate for exterior and interior fireproofing applications
  • The preferred choice for structural steel that supports valuable or high-risk equipment

Commercial spray fireproofing provides durable, reliable protection against fire in your steel and concrete building. To learn more about its many benefits for your Raleigh-area structure, contact Alpha online today.
